Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to treat substance use disorders such as opioid use disorders (OUD). MAT often reduces the risk of relapse and helps to manage and maintain recovery.

Are you ready to take the first step?

MAT significantly reduces the risk of relapse and opioid overdose deaths.

Why MAT?

MAT reduces cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and post-acute withdrawal syndrome, which can cause severe withdrawal symptoms to recur up to a year after treatment, interfering with an individual’s ability to continue or engage in other therapies. Managing these physical issues allows the individual to focus their attention on their psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs through therapy, group meetings, and recovery support groups.

At Gibson Center for Behavioral Change, MAT is used in combination with interdisciplinary interventions, including:

  • Counseling
  • Peer Support
  • Employee Support
  • Community Support
  • Harm Reduction Education

This comprehensive approach is largely why medication-assisted treatment works so well: It addresses many of the roadblocks that can lead to relapse while allowing clients to focus on the inner, personal work of recovery.

Medication-assisted treatment is well-researched, evidence-based and backed by all major medical associations for use in substance use disorder treatment. The medications we use in medication-assisted treatment for alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have been clinically proven to make both inpatient and outpatient substance use treatment safer and more successful.
